Some quick facts of why the Honda Clarity, the Hydrogen Cell powered car, could have the solutions and technology to change the world. Here are some reasons.

Reduce The Need For Oil
The financial world is reliant on oil prices, with some nations currently extremely rich because of the reserves of oil they own. Removing the need for this oil, will not only reduce prices, but also may in fact take away the whole income for that nation.

Change The Need Of Car Parts
With only one moving part within the electric motor, the car parts industry would need to change drastically, to adapt to the new electrical technology. It is more likely that those already with the electrical industries would take over this demand.

Garages And Servicing
To say a washing machine serviceman may be more qualified to repair damaged motors may be nearer the truth than we would like to admit. Of course there will still be some normal car parts on the new breed of cars, but new training, equipment and tools will be required.

New Taxation
Our road tax is currently calculated on how much C02 gasses come out of our exhaust but the Honda Clarity has zero emissions, meaning zero road tax. Of course it is unlikely that the government will let us go tax free on the vehicles we own, so we could see road tolls or other taxation procedures put in place, to get some of this money back.

Emergency Roadside Services
The breakdown cover patrolman, such as the AA, RAC and Green Flag will need to be retrained, all vans which themselves by now may run by fuel cells, new tools and there may not even be anything like the breakdown cover call outs that we have today. After all when has an electric motor failed to start in the cold?

It is hard to promote why breakdown cover could be an important purchase in terms of saving you money time and stress. Well this is written when America votes for its next President, and election that is probably one of the most important in USA history based on the events of the last 8 years.

Lewis Hamilton has won the F1 world championship, bringing some pride back to the UK; the place motor racing was born and has some amazing talent. Even Ferrari relies on chief engineers from the UK, to compete with Maclaren.

But probably the main reason for a reduced demand for breakdown cover is the worldwide financial crisis with banks around the world needing bailing out from Governments and tax payer’s money.

Christmas is around the corner and families are more concerned about finding money
to buy presents for the kids, than that breakdown cover policy for the car. These are trying times with uncertainty all around.

Breakdown cover net will be visiting the USA very soon, and will be writing about how the USA are handing things. Will breakdown cover still be an important purchase for them after the election? Let’s wait and see.

For the RAC and The AA you turn up at their site and within seconds you know how much your breakdown cover premium is likely to be with easy links to follow through to your chosen policy type, but it just is not that easy with Green Flag.

There are price prompts as you arrive on the homepage, which look pretty attractive, but at this point I doubt many would expect to fill in a form o at least 2 pages with all the criteria of your car, before you get the breakdown cover quote. Inevitably it ends up being more expensive that those prices on the homepage.

Because the car was nearly 10 years old, we have to presume this pushed the recovery premium up, to an annual cost just below what The AA was quoting without the form filling. You can’t help thinking that many who do not like filling in forms with personal information, may add false information about themselves, i.e.post code, and telephone number, just on case they did not like the final quote. After all, Green Flag now have that information which could be used for further unwanted communication.

We are not suggesting this would actually happen, but you have to ask the question of why they need you email address, home address, and other sensitive information if it plays no part in the final price that is quoted for your breakdown cover policy.
It would be a better procedure if you filled in the factors only that affected your breakdown cover premium quote and then if the potential customer agrees to go ahead; at that point they could continue with the form and add the personal information.

The truth is that as soon as the form filling procedure starts, there will be a section of the public that will click away, as for decades you would join your motoring club, for a set fee.

A couple of days back, I decided to check the new rates for breakdown cover, as mine is about to expire soon. To my surprise, the search term breakdown cover came up with 100’s of names offering coverage in UK. But what actually had me interested was the number of websites offering a ‘comparison’ service. I was intrigued and decided to pursue this further. After browsing many of them, I now realise that they are good, but they left me very confused!

The comparison websites list all the major breakdown service providers, different levels or types of covers provided by them, and, of course, the cost for the type of car breakdown cover you are specifically looking for.

And your choice, based on the company and type of cover, will be the deciding factors regarding the quality of breakdown service you receive.

Some of the points that left me confused and seeking more clarity were, customer testimonials that didn’t really give me any real idea about the best insurance company; the star rating system as these comparison websites don’t mention how they give these ratings; no clear indication of which product or company the website believes provides the best breakdown service.

The truth is that none of these comparison websites have the customer’s best interest at heart. They get paid to promote the companies offering breakdown cover and therefore, they have no reason to be honest or impartial.

So, just like me when you look up breakdown cover on the Internet, don’t assume you’ll get 100% accurate information from the comparison sites….!

Well a big blow for the 2 nations of Fance and Italy, because 16 out of the bottom 18 manufacturers were from here.

Of course the poll was only from the top 100 cars sold in the UK, but 16 of these in the bottom 18, must show a trend. The worst car was the Fiat Punto, (the older model) and not her new Grande Punto. This Fiat reported the most amount of issues that any other car, it is no surprise that Fiat see its new generation of cars as a new start, including the new Fiat 500 to be release later this year.

If you own a Fiat Punto, you maybe should be considering some sort of breakdown cover.

Of course Renault and Peugeot sufferd badly also, throughout most of their ranges.

Lets see what the future brings

This weeks Auto Express shows this years “Driver Power” results of the the top 100 cars, from a poll of 30,000 drivers.
And something that we would not have imagined 15 – 20 years ago is that Skoda have produced Britain’s most satisfying car.
The model that has won this award is the Soda Octavia, it was top for 7 catorgories out of 10, giving it a 91.88% satisfaction score ahead of the Lexus RX and the Honda S2000, which won last year. It is quite an amazing turnaround from a manufacturer that was accused of making skips in the 80s, even with its impressive Rally record. Of course its revival has a lot to do with Volkwagen, taking over the company some time ago, but now we have a situation that these cars made in the Czech republic are rated higher than Volkswagen that saved them. If you have a Skoda Octavia, it may be hard to get you to buy breakdown cover, such is the reliability.

I have been impressed with the online prices of cars from one specific car supermarket that shall remain nameless.

I asked for a quote on my wife’s car as a trade in and of course the figure quoted was much less than expected. in fact it took all the savings away from buying a car from a local dealer but getting the book price for my part ex.

But there was something that bothered me more. That was a charge to check the car over before I pick it up. it would checked to see if it was stolen and ensure it was road worthy.

This is the first time I have come across this charge. In fact the very reason why anyone would buy a car from a dealer is so you have a comeback if anything goes wrong.

In this case it is if, I would have to pay my £85 to ensure the dealer who is selling the car got it right?

Most dealers do these checks before they even buy the car and it is also a legal requirement to sell the car in a roadworthy condition. So I have to pay for the privilege of having them check the car over to ensure it is roadworthy and legal for them to sell

For me it is a way to reduce the selling price online and then get the money back in other ways.

Of course I did not start the deal, I will be looking elsewhere, to a dealer who knows their responsabilities as a motor dealer.

During the golden years of motoring, there was not doubt of who the authority was regarding breakdown cover or motoring issues in general. It was the RAC and the AA of course, both motoring clubs set up to help each other in emergencies and general advice. But now breakdown cover has become big business and has evolved into insurance companies or bought out by one. Originally charity foundaions were set up by these to continue working with motoring issues, the RAC Foundationand now AIM has taken over the AA concerns.
But these are orhganisations that focus more on the safty issue of motoring and our rights, but who is now the authority on breakdown cover?

The truth is, I don’t think anyone is anymore, the big companies sell it, the FSA treat it as a financial contract. There are still smaller organisations such as Gem motoring assistance and the Royal Automobile Club, but these are not large enough to be deemed as an authority.

It could be that comparison websites or review websites could be the next authority, where the term “word o mouth” is transfered onto the web.

If it is going to be that way, we would like to be become one of the mediums doing just that to enure the best information for you.

It is important to have as much information as possible for something that should get you home in an emergency.

I have been planning this for weeks, but my breakdown cover comparison page is nearly finished.
It’s not as easy as you think, because many policies do not exaclty match, so deciding what catagery to put them in has been awkward. On top of this, prices are continuoulsy changing, so it is important I do not confuse or mislead any visitors to my site.

The images take up lot of bandwidth also and so are slow to load, but this is what my visitors want a “one stop comparison page” for car breakdown cover. I have decided it is best to name this as a quick guide rather than a comprehensive comparison service. I have also added a disclaimed regarding pricing, stating that visitors must visit the relevant breakdown cover provider ’s website to get full information about the insurance on offer.

This website is a portal to breakdown cover websites and does not provide the service, but it is important we still get it right.
