We have covered a similar subject before but not with car insurance, with breakdown cover. The AA actively promotes student contents insurance so why can’t this service be extended to car insurance or breakdown cover.

The question that must be asked, why would a student have a lesser risk with contents insurance than anyone else? If this is true, or it is a case of giving discounts to student s because they are seen a future cash rich customers, why can’t this be expanded?

We ran a student breakdown cover campaign a while ago, but to be honest did not get anything like the profile we were hoping this campaign would. The argument was that as breakdown cover is less risk based than normal insurance services, the fact that the two top breakdown cover providers the AA and the RAC, offer the same price policies no matter what car you drive, the mileage you do or risk of a breakdown proves this. Any new extra breakdown cover policies attained would in fact be a bonus. Take away any commissions from affiliates of on the road salesmen and it would be possible to reduce the cost of breakdown cover to those in full time education.

For some reason advertising the AA, who specialise in breakdown cover have focused on the AA student insurance options, rather than or as well, an AA Breakdown Cover student campaign. Maybe we are biased here for obvious reasons, but there must be a good reason to get students on your side. After all they will be the money earners in the future.

The student campaign that was brought together to give those such as students cheaper breakdown cover to help their finances has not had the response that was planned. There was a definate plan to reduce the commsion to affiliates and webmasters and pass on those saving to those who would not normally buy the service.

The only way to pass the message on to those large organisations was to post your personal message on Breakdown cover net. we know that at least a few members of these large organisations read this blog, so the message would have at least got across.

There was never any promises or gaurantees, but at least we could tried together and go the party going. Of course there are other groups who could also benefit from this process should the student campaign be successful.

I will leave it with you all

The other day I came across an article in a magazine, which said that more than 20% students in UK own a car and that all of them need car insurance! It’s quite a revealing statistic as car insurance just doesn’t protect you, and your car but also others. Mostly due to the high risks involved, students just like young drivers have to pay out more for their car insurance premiums.

Car Insurance for students has three primary coverage options

Third Party Only — the cheapest car insurance policy in town! It is also the minimum coverage allowed by law. Covers accidents which involve collision, injury or death. Doesn’t cover you or your car. If your care gets damaged, stolen, or destroyed you will have to bear all expenses. Doesn’t cover any incapacitating injury even if it ruins your life. Read the fine print carefully.

Third Party, Fire and Theft — a tad bit more expensive that the 1st option, but covers you in case of car theft or destruction by arson. Makes good sense if you live in a poor, crime-ridden area and drive an old, easy to steal car.

Comprehensive Car Insurance — expensive, and covers you for all risks including you and other people. Keep your premiums low by agreeing to pay a higher charge called ‘excess’. This is usually £300 and needs to be paid by you as the first portion of the cost in case of a claim. This type of car insurance keeps you well-covered for any serious incidents and accidents.
