As a marshal, you can volunteer your services directly to the clubs you are associated with or then through the British Motorsport Marshals Club (BMMC).

As the main channel through which marshals stay connected and informed about the hundreds of motorsport meetings and events held throughout the UK, every year, BMMC is an exceptional channel that brings together all motor sport enthusiasts.

Like this friend of mine, Tom, is a motor sport fanatic. He has the names of all the great race drivers, their career graphs, etc on his finger tips! He called me recently to tell me he had to cancel out on dinner ‘cause he had to attend a meeting at BMMC, London. He then went on to tell me about marshalling and how he got involved here. Rest of the information was dug up by me…for you all.

The BMMC circulates the details of the events to all its members through the regional magazines and by organising various meets and distributing volunteering forms. They also provide insurance cover for all members who have been chosen to marshal while they are travelling to and from meetings.

Each member marshal attends meetings ranging from regional club events to large scale international motor sport events such as Formula 1 Grand Prix, Rally of Great Britain, etc.

Marshalling is a great experience and provides huge exposure to all of you who love motor sport and is definitely your best bet to meet the stars of the race tracks…!

What you musn’t forget though is the hard work that goes into marshalling and the long periods of time you are left standing doing nothing. You must also act as the local breakdown cover man to get the stricken cars off the race track as quick as possible in a safe way. You may be the first person to attend an accident so you will need to know what to do if someones life is in you hands also. Only those who love motorsport will probably stay the distance and go through the training required to be where the racing is.
