Many a time while driving on the motorway, I have noticed that many drivers are not aware of proper traffic rules while other do not follow good driving practices make me tear my hair out in uncontrollable rage and despair! Most traffic snarls and accidents on the motorway can be prevented easily if all of us follow the below mentioned good driving practices suggested by The Association of British Drivers.
1. When entering the motorway, always use the slip road to gain speed to the vehicles already on the motorway as this helps to ensure safe traffic flow.
2. One of the most important rules to follow is for overtaking. Always make it a point to use the leftmost lane to drive your car unless you want to overtake. If the next to your left is empty, then you should drive in that lane and do not stay out longer than required.
3. Always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Here’s a tip: Count two seconds from the time the vehicle you are following you passes a particular point to when you pass it and double this time if you are driving during raining season.
We don’t use much cruise control in the UK, but if we did
4. Use cruise control. Maintaining consistent speed helps everyone. If you vary your speed frequentyly or brake unnecessarily, you cause discomfort to other drivers. Keep a safe distance from the car ahead of you, this will help you assess if brakes need to be applied. Of course very little cars in the UK hace cruise control, but you get the message keep a constant speed.
5. Always use the correct indicator while changing lanes. Also check your mirrors and take a quick look over your shoulder to check your blind spot for any approaching vehicle.
Be aware of anyone who may have broken down on the hard shoulder and also the breakdown cover van that may be there assisting the stricken car.
