breakdown cover

The good driving rules for motorway driving continue…

6. If you find yourself being stuck in a traffic jam or caught in slow moving traffic, use your hazard lights to warn the vehicles behind that you are slowing down. Always maintain a good distance from the back of the queue and keep your eyes on the mirrors for signs of any fast approaching traffic. This will help you stay out of harm’s way or at least minimize any rear end impact.

7. When exiting the motorway maintain the same speed until you are within reach of the exit slip road. Slowing down suddenly or braking while still on the motorway can cause major congestion around exit junctions and can be very dangerous. Slips roads are designed to allow you time to slow down.

8. Learn to identify other drivers’ intentions. If you observe vehicles drifting away from the centre of the lane, then they may be about to change lane. If you see vehicles overtaking those in front, then they are in hurry and want to overtake so give them plenty of room is possible.

9. Always keep an eye out for what I call ‘nuisance drivers’. If you see a driver taking on their mobile phone or chatting to their co-passengers or eat and not paying attention to the road, then keep distance and stay as far away from these people as possible.

Keep these cardinal rules in mind when driving on a motorway, enjoy your drive while being safe, and stress-free…well almost stress-free!

Also don’t forget about the emergency phones that are all along most motorways. These are not just to call breakdown cover services but also the police and ambulance.
