Car dings or dent repairs

It seems the Americans use the word ding instead of dent, I prefer the English way.

So you have managed to bump your car and the damage is not some thing you are going to use your insurance to repair and you have decided to do it yourself, so what is next.

Well unfortunately a dint is not just a dint, there are a few different options depending on the size of the dent and where it is located. If the panel is quite a large one and of a reasonably flattish surface you can use a dent puller. This requires you to drill a hole in the centre of the dent, then insert the puller, which you then use to straighten out the dent. Of course this still will not be perfect, so you would then use a bit of filler to fill on the drilled hole and get the shape exactly as it should be. Sometimes you apply a bit of glue to the threads that pull the dint out.

Receiving a dint in awkward corners or very small panels may need a different approach. This may require a few holes being drilled and a small section of the metal bent to the nearest shape and then filler applied to get the curvature right. If it is a small dent, then you just use filler, as there may be no benefit in reshaping the metal. it is ironic that large dents can be easier to repair than small ones in awkward places.

Dints on no hollow panels may require a small hammer or mallet, some wood to soften the blows and then just some good old fashioned metal shaping to get the shape right. It sounds easy and with practice can be, but your first time may not be perfect, so consider the finish you want.

Body repair is different to mechanical repair in that you can follow a manual to replace this and that for a mechanical failure or breakdown, but with body repair a fair amount of practice is needed before you will get a professional finish.then you come to repainting over the dent, well that's another story.

Car Dents And Breakdown Cover

There may be times when all you need is some emergency repair to get you on your way home from a minor road accident or similar. Would your breakdown cover agency help you in those situations, or even better, would they recover that car back home for you as part of your breakdown cover policy. It may be worth a few minutes to check this out for your piece of mind. Some breakdown cover organisation say they are not just there for faults on your car, but for other little emergencies also, check your out!
