Driving On The Wrong Side Of The Road
I remember as a kid watching a black and white documentary, when Sweden swapped from driving on the left to the right. It all occurred on the stroke of midnight with as many police as possible on the roads to ensure in minimized the accidents.
I have no idea what accidents there were, but could you imagine doing that today in this modern 2 car society?
I would say almost impossible or possible with a few serious road accidents. I would imagine the motoring clubs and breakdown cover organisations would have something to say if we decided to be more like Europe.
Ironically though, I find it easier to drive on the right than the left. I know this, because every time I visit a European Country I hire a car and it takes me longer to re-associate myself with my driving when i get back here in the UK, than initially whist abroad. It is also interesting that when skippering an internal waterways boat you would pass on the right as you do abroad, rather than following our driving examples.
As the UK was pretty much the empire of the world in the early 1900's when I presume decisions like this were made, I am surprised how more countries drive on the right than the left, to follow our great nations example.
Well it is not going to change and for those of you who drive on the right no matter what country you are in, have some considerations for others. Some more information on this would be helpful and if received, I will add it to this page for everyone to read.
Breakdown Cover Companies Offer Advice Driving Abroad
As taking your car abroad can be a nerve racking thing to do, some breakdown cover organisations such as the AA, offer advice for driving abroad and of course driving on the other side of the road. You pedals remain the same, but your now change gear with a different hand and you are looking in different directions to give right of way.
